Welcome to StrangrFjörðr Norwegian Forest Cats

About Us

We are Elizabeth & Richard, breeders of Norwegian Forest Cats since 2017.
Our home and Cattery is situated in Northern Ireland, on the Ards Peninsula, Co Down. We have views across beautiful countryside to the Irish Sea on one side, and Strangford Lough and the Mourne mountains on the other.
Strangford Lough (from old Norse, StrangrFjӧrðr) is a strong sea inlet. The largest in Ireland, the lough is almost fully enclosed by the Ards Peninsula, with only a narrow channel linking the lough to the Irish Sea. The main body of the lough has at least seventy islands along with many islets, bays, coves, headlands and mudflats. It is part of the Strangford and Lecale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, while the lough was designated Northern Irelands first Marine Conservation Zone 2013. (Wikipedia)
The Vikings were active in the area during the middle ages and hence the name for my Cattery of Viking Cats.
We bought this 200 year old “Crooked cottage” specifically for the Cattery and whilst some of the Cats have heated chalets and large enclosures outside, our cats and kittens are raised in the homely cottage.
We are listed with the Norwegian Forest Club and register all our cats and kittens with GCCF, some also with GCCFI.

Aboutus_edited_edited.png

"The Norwegian Forest Cat is a large, heavy boned, yet elegant semi-longhaired cat. The most important features being type and coat quality. Originating in harsh natural conditions, the breed became an outdoor working cat on Norwegian farms. The appearance of the Norwegian Forest Cat should reflect this natural heritage.

The Norwegian Forest Cat matures slowly, with full development of the cat and its coat taking up to four years. A distinctive double coat is required".
